It can sometimes be very difficult to find hand knotted rugs and that is because they are also known as Oriental rugs. Genuine Oriental rugs are flat woven or piled fabric that is hand knotted. They usually come from the Middle or even the Far East, such as China, India, Tibet and Turkey. They are not made in any of the Western European countries or the United States. Native American hand-woven rugs are completely different to Oriental rugs. There are many differences between these two styles of rugs so you should not find yourself getting them confused accidentally.

It is very easy to mistake hand knotted rugs with other types of hand-made rugs, such as the hand tufted rugs, which also come from the Far or the Middle East. However, there is one way to tell them apart and that is the way that they are made. Hand knotted rugs are drawn onto a canvas and that is used to make the rug with the appropriate colors of wool. A piece of scrim fabric is then glued onto the back of the rug, once it is complete. This glue is the only thing that holds the wool in place. You will not find any yarn knotted over any warps on a real Oriental rug. Another main difference between the two types of hand-made rugs is that a natural fridge of wool will appear at the ends of the rug on an Oriental rug; this is usually glued on with other types.

Hand knotted rugs are generally made of expensive wool that does not wear as quickly as other types. While they are expensive, they are definitely worth the value of that money. Because there is only a little glue used, it will not deteriorate as much over time, like the other style of hand-made rugs.

It is very important to look at a rug closely if you want a hand knotted rug. The colors and the patterns on a hand tufted rug will appear very similar to those on a hand knotted rug. Many will actually look like it is just of a lower quality of design, especially when you look at specific rugs from specific countries. It will be the price that will show you the different since you could be paying double as what you would pay for other hand-made rugs when you buy a hand knotted one.
