How to Read Notes for a Violin

The violin is a popular instrument but it is one of the hardest to play well. It has one of the largest ranges when it comes to notes and can play lots of different styles. Many violinists learn to play music by ear, so that they do not need to read music. However, while this is a great talent, to progress it is important to learn how to read violin notes for beginners.

The Basics

Learning how to read violin notes for beginners is just like reading the standard notes for the piano. The dot all mean the same and the positioning means the same note. It does not take too long to learn the basics and it is actually the playing that is the most difficult and takes the most time.

The Treble Clef

The first thing that you need to do is figure out which the treble clef is. This symbol will be at the start off all lines to music and looks very similar to a &. This is what the right hand plays on piano sheet music, if you are using that to work off of.

You need to know what notes will be placed on each line which is E, G, B, D, F upwards. There are only five lines. You can remember this with the following phrase: Every Good Boy Does Fine. You also need to remember what each of the spaces between the lines will mean, which is F, A, C, E. This already spells out something that will help you remember the order.

Notes Above the Lines

The notes above and below the lines are a little more difficult and sometimes harder to spot. You have D and then C going downwards. From there you will get B, A, G and so on. These notes will have lines that are added to the notes to help you distinguish between the lines. As you move upwards you start with G and then A, B, C and so on. You only have the letters A-G and they are repeated.

You will need to learn where your notes are on the violin. This can be difficult because there are no markings on the fingerboard to tell you where to place your fingers, unlike many other instruments. You could consider placing a sticker on the finger board so that you remember where to place your fingers to start off with and then you can remove then when you become more advanced. Learning how to read violin notes for beginners is not the hard part because there are so many sayings that you can use to remember them – it is the finger placement that is the hardest.
