Nelson Mandela Home but Using Facial Expressions to Communicate

95-year-old Nelson Mandela has been home from hospital for two months but is having to use facial expressions became he can’t speak to communicate. His former wife, Winnie, has explained that tubes that are still used to help him breathe are stopping him from speaking. However, despite being in critical condition, Mandela is home, stable and not on life support.

The news broke back in June that Mandela had been in hospital since June 8 due to a lung infection. It has been many years since he has appeared in public but that does not stop the public from loving and routing for him. June wasn’t the first time he has had problems with his lungs either.

The Early Life of Nelson Mandela

The 95-year-old gained a good start in life, despite losing his father when he was still young. Originally called Rolihlahla, he was given the nickname Nelson during primary school. There was a policy at the time for students to have Christian names. He went on to gain a Bachelor’s of Art degree from the University of South Africa, after initially being expelled for being involved in a student protest at the University College of Fort Hare.

That student protest was not the last. One of the most notable led to his arrest on December 5, 1955. He was acquitted for treason by March 29, 1961. He continued with his protest for preach, even changing his name to travel around Africa and out of the continent secretly. This led to his imprisonment and part of the reason why Nelson Mandela is now home but having to communicate through facial expressions.

Imprisonment in Robben Island

Mandela was caught and charged for leaving the country illegally and sentenced to five years in prison. On May 27, 1963 he was sent to Robben Island but still couldn’t keep himself out of trouble. He was one of the nine on trial in the Rivonia Trial. This is when his lung problems started and would plague him for the rest of his life.

His life has recently been idolized in film, with the creating of Long Walk to Freedom. It stars Idris Elba and Naomie Harris as Nelson and Winnie and will be available in theaters from November 29.
This last infection seemed the worst of all and many rumors spread that Mandela had died. He was in hospital from June 8 to September 1. However, Winnie has stated that her ex-husband is not on life support and the tubes used are just for keeping his lungs free from fluid. He currently has 22 doctors treating him and around-the-clock care. His home is very similar to ICU conditions as germs are still a problem while he heals.

There has been confirmation of how long Mandela will need these breathing tubes but the fact that he is home is positive. Nelson Mandela is learning to communicate effectively with facial expressions while home, so doctors and his family know his wishes and can help look after him.
